Maeda Chikubōsai I Japanese
Not on view
Maeda Chikubōsai I, from Sakai, established a distinguished lineage of bamboo artists. He made Chinese-style (karamono) and literati baskets, pioneered a method of using natural bamboo branches and roots, and was known for his bamboo root handles (a hallmark of Sakai style). He eventually became one of the most acclaimed bamboo artists of the early Shōwa period. Many of his works were presented to the imperial family and high-ranking officials.
