This and other panels for a chamber screen representing Aesop’s fables were given in 1777 to the queen’s brother Emperor Joseph II. Foreign royalty were responsible for commissioning frames for the panels they received; this example, however, remained unmounted. Almost never available for sale, Savonnerie screen panels were principally reserved for French royal use, although records indicate that on rare occasions they were lent, mounted on a screen, to visiting ambassadors (such as Ottoman Mehmed Said Efendi) to use during their time in France.
