Enthroned Bodhisattva, probably Manjushri

Southern Thailand

Not on view

This enthroned Manjushri, missing its aureole and defining attributes, is identifiable by comparison with cat. no. 164. A Javanese inscription dated 782 indicates that Manjushri was highly venerated in eighth-century insular Southeast Asia; it records the installation of a cult image of Manjushri at the instruction of the Sailendra king’s guru, a Bengali, at the center of a mandala of icons at Candi Sewu, central Java.
