Lion's Face

A large stucco lion’s face was revealed in situ at Chedi Chula Pathon during the 1939 excavation at Nakhon Pathom by the French Mission led by Pierre Dupont and Thailand’s Fine Arts Department. Spectacular in size and expressiveness, it would have formed part of sculptural panels flanking the basement stairs. It exhibits the same features as the sculptural lion from Wat Phra Men displayed nearby and is probably from the same workshop.
