Stalk, Version 2

“This work was conceived after a visit to an exhibition at the Reyum Institute [of Arts and Culture] in Phnom Penh on Cambodian ornament, [titled] “Kbach” in Khmer. Kbach are ancient abstractions from nature used as patterns in everything from cloth to architecture. They serve to symbolize forms in nature. One such ornament is derived from the peel of the bamboo shoot and is commonly used to decorate the bases of temple pillars and the tops of stupas. The inner flamelike form is suggestive of infinite renewal, of growth from within.” —Sopheap Pich
