Women Strolling along the Sumida Riverbank
Utagawa Hiroshige Japanese
Not on view
Cherry blossoms are just emerging on the banks of the Sumida River where a group of people have congregated at a ferry crossing. Hiroshige offers a glimpse of the roof of a boat just below the level of the embankment. As the double peaks of Mt. Tsukuba are visible in the distance, this spot may have been near the Takeya ferry crossing in front of the Mimeguri Inari Shrine, a famous place for cherry blossom viewing on the east bank of the river.
While Hiroshige is best known for his landscape prints, he also produced many ukiyo-e paintings characterized by beautiful women rendered in subdued colors in tranquil settings, with background elements brushed in light ink.
