Buddha Preaching

Central Myanmar

Not on view

This Buddha in the teaching posture (vitarkamudra) is enthroned on a type of double lotus pedestal associated with the early Pala dynasty of eastern India (mid-8th century). Indian connections are also suggested by the manner in which the monastic robe is drawn up to cover both shoulders. Features resemble those of bronzes of this period from eastern India, most notably from Jhewari, Chittagong District, Bangladesh. Thus this statue represents a late development in Pyu Buddha imagery, which previously had followed conventions associated with southern India and Sri Lanka.
