Chest on stand
Not on view
This chest is the product of a moment in Indo-European partnership when luxury hardwood furniture, popularly termed ‘Ebony Furniture,’ was produced by Indian craftsmen on the Coromandel Coast of southeastern India for officers of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) based in Asia. The high point of this vogue—which found expression not only in furniture but also in silver tableware and dyed chintz cotton textiles— was the 1680s through to the 1720s. A desire to emulate continental European taste led to the commissioning of an array of luxury goods, including this genre of furniture in the Dutch mode.
