Botanical Painting: Geranium

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 693

Sultan Muhammad ‘Adil Shah of Bijapur (r. 1627–56) and his formidable prime minister, the Abyssinian Ikhlas Khan, sit together on a striding elephant. The prime minister rides behind the sultan, emblematic of his being the real power behind the throne. The double portrait of these two eminent figures from the Deccan is enhanced by the signature of the artists at left.
