Single-rod coiled basket tray

Habematolel Pomo of Upper Lake (Lake County, California)

Not on view

A basket comparable to this one appears near the bottom center edge of Tavernier’s Roundhouse painting. Although it would not have been present during the mfom Xe dance, it would have played a part in the feasting afterwards. These decorative coiled trays were used to serve food at such community celebrations. Their Native name can be translated as a "guest’s platter." In contemporary life, the equivalent would be a tray made of silver or china.
