Ceremonial Man's Headpiece
Robert Joseph Geary Elem Pomo (Lake County, California)
Not on view
Made by Geary for contemporary dancers, these two ceremonial headpieces are similar in form and style to those worn by dancers in the 1870s, highlighting the continuum of Elem Pomo culture. While Tavernier painted both male and female dancers in elaborate regalia, elements like these are noticeably absent from his work. They are nevertheless important pieces of ceremonial attire, worn by women as topknots and by men as back headpieces.
