This devotional print celebrates the offering made by the famed Vaishnava learned Hindu holyman (acharya) Shri Vadiraja Thirtharu to his lord Hayagriva, the “horse-necked” Hindu divinity. According to the popular legend, this devotee made a daily food offering (naivedya) of a sweet dish of grain, ghee and almonds to Hayagriva who appeared as a white horse. The celebrant lived in Sondhe in the lushly forested hills of western Karnataka in the sixteenth century. His reputed devotion to Hayagriva lead to the Vaishnava temple at Sondhe becomes a pilgrimage center, a status it retains to this day.
