Relic of the Eurydice. Lost March 24, 1878

On View Gallery Watson Library

HMS Eurydice, a 26-gun Royal Navy corvette, was the victim of one of Britain’s worst peacetime naval disasters. She was a training ship for ordinary seamen which sunk on March 24, 1878, killing about 300 men. The event is identified on the book’s brass foredge clasp. The orientation of the book is upside down. The covers are illustrated with an incised image of the ship and a relief-carved anchor.
