Box with tulip and hearts motif in book form

On View Gallery Watson Library

Love and springtime are the messages embedded in this book box, which is the earliest object in the Heckman gift. The book is carved from one piece of wood and has a slide opening on the front. Its decoration consists mostly of chip-carved geometric patterns, a tulip (front), and entwined hearts (back). The decorative motifs which relate to bookbinding design include raised bands on the spine and foredge clasps.
