Mechanical singing bird box in book form

On View Gallery Watson Library

Automated singing bird boxes in book form, made of precious materials, and resembling fine bookbindings, have been made since the 18th century. Their cases have a small slider which causes the lid to lift, allowing the bird to emerge, turn from side to side, flap its wings, and move its beak and tail, while simultaneously singing. Following the performance, the bird submerges into the box and the lid closes.
