On View Gallery Watson Library

This lacquer box is one of several made in Asian style by the Olibet Biscuit Company. Olibet has produced fancy biscuits since the mid-19th century in Bordeaux, France, and in 1872 it opened France’s first biscuit factory in Talence.

Three factories followed in France and Spain between 1879 and 1895. At the same time, the company was earning honors and medals, notably winning the gold medal at the 1889 Universal Exposition in Paris.
