Folding portable lantern in book form

On View Gallery Watson Library

During the 19th century, portable folding pocket lanterns were common sources of candle lighting for people from all walks of life. Book lanterns were made in several countries, including the United States and France. A United States Patent issued to Georg H. Magersuppe in 1861 describes one like the brass lantern with handle, shown here, as being an indispensable sturdy option for sailors and policemen. Other, more decorative and delicate variants, such as painted, printed, and hand-bound faux book variants were intended for indoor use.
