Este magnífico busto de Calígula se adhiere al estilo oficial de retrato creado para Augusto, su bisabuelo, subrayando así la unidad y continuidad de la dinastía Julio-Claudia. A pesar de las limitaciones impuestas, el artista ha sabido capturar rasgos de la personalidad del emperador. El orgulloso porte de la cabeza y los labios finos y fruncidos en una mueca tal vez hagan referencia a la vanidad y crueldad que le hicieron tristemente célebre. Su breve reinado terminó con su asesinato, cuando tenía solo veintiocho años de edad, y muchos de sus retratos fueron rotos en pedazos, reutilizados en otras estatuas o arrojados al río Tíber.
