Uno de los prodigios de la pintura italiana, Mantegna tenía poco más de veinte años cuando creó esta obra que, sin embargo, ya revela la plenitud de su increíble don para plasmar detalles descriptivos. En el primer plano, plantas brotan de las grietas entre las rocas y las ondas en la superficie del río chocan contra sus orillas. Aunque el tema del cuadro es tradicional, Mantegna demuestra su gran talento artístico con la minuciosa descripción de todos esos detalles. El tratamiento expresivo de las figuras parece ser una respuesta a las ideas de los humanistas cortesanos de la época, y la meticulosa representación del paisaje refleja la admiración de Mantegna por la pintura neerlandesa.
