El palacio de Westminster
En 1905 y 1906, André Derain viajó a Londres a sugerencia del comerciante de arte Ambroise Vollard, y realizó para él diversas escenas de la ciudad, entre ellas este cuadro. Según explicó luego Derain, se inspiró en las vistas de Londres pintadas por Claude Monet muy pocos años antes, que «habían causado gran impresión en París». Las pinceladas largas e irregulares y la osada y brillante paleta delatan la influencia de los neo–impresionistas Paul Signac y Henri-Edmond Cross, pero también la de Matisse, con quien Derain había pasado el verano de 1905 en el sur de Francia.
