Nel 1905 e 1906, André Derain si recò a Londra su suggerimento del commerciante d’arte Ambroise Vollard, per il quale eseguì diverse scene della città, tra cui questo quadro. Come raccontò lo stesso Derain in seguito, queste tele si ispirano ad alcune vedute di Londra dipinte da Claude Monet qualche anno prima, che avevano “suscitato una grandissima attenzione a Parigi”. Le lunghe pennellate interrotte di Derain e i colori vivaci e brillanti rispecchiano l’influenza dei pittori neo-impressionisti Paul Signac ed Henri-Edmond Cross, oltre a quella di Matisse, in compagnia del quale Derain trascorse l’estate del 1905 nel sud della Francia.
