Cope

Not on view

The rich velvet of this cope, worn by priests and bishops, is typical of fabrics of the Safavid Persian Empire. The orphrey along its edge shows pairs of holy figures identified in Armenian. The Virgin and an angel are at the top. The four men at its base are Saint Nerses I Part‘ev and his son Saint Sahak I Part‘ev, who helped develop the early Armenian church, Saint Basil of Caesarea, and Saint Nicholas.
