Gospel Book
Monastery of Hṙomkla
Not on view
This Gospel Book, the first produced at Hromkla, has an innovative combination of motifs. In traditional Armenian style, the evangelist Saint Luke sits writing at his desk opposite the incipit, or first, page of his Gospel. The dove of the Holy Spirit flying to his ear to emphasize the divine inspiration of the text and his symbol, a winged lion, standing on the incipit page are Western motifs introduced into Armenian art at Hromkla.
