Fringed Necklace

Armenian

Not on view

This handsome necklace, which must have belonged to one of the wealthy inhabitants of Dvin, was discovered on the top of its citadel in 1939. Similar works made of a double loop-in-loop (braided) chain with hanging ornaments were common in the Greco-Roman and Byzantine worlds. Its design links Dvin with trade routes west to the Mediterranean.
