Gospel Book

Not on view

These pages reflect the elaborate manuscript style of Sis. The billowing figure of the evangelist Saint Matthew, similar to figures in contemporary Byzantine Palaiologan art, faces the first page of the text’s ornate marginal marker. The Tree of Jesse, a new motif introduced from the West, presents Christ’s genealogy as described in the accompanying text, Matthew 1:1–21. Portraits of David, Solomon, and the Virgin rise from the sleeping prophet at the base to a standing Christ above.
