Madame Grand (Noël Catherine Vorlée, 1761–1835)

Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun French

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 633

Born in India to British parents, Madame Grand (1761–1835) was ill-educated but musical, clever, and attractive to the many important men whose protection and favors she secured. Married at an early age, she soon became entangled in an extramarital affair. By 1782, she had left her husband and moved to Paris, where she became a figure of interest. Vigée Le Brun painted the seductive blond with eyes raised, lips parted, and a musical score in hand: a modern Saint Cecilia.
