Cornetto in A

German

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 684

In Caravaggio’s The Musicians, the figure at right holds a cornett, a woodwind instrument with finger holes and a cup-shaped mouthpiece. Made from wood and wrapped in leather, the sound of the cornett was often compared to the human voice. It was used with trombones to reinforce choirs and alongside the violin as a solo instrument.
