Charles Stuart Forbes

John Singer Sargent American

Not on view

Painter Charles Stuart Forbes (1856–1926), like Sargent, was born to American parents in Europe and was at home on both sides of the Atlantic. They met as students in the atelier of Carolus-Duran in Paris and moved in similar expatriate circles. Sargent seems to have dashed off this broadly painted portrait of Forbes as a token of friendship, but left it unfinished. The decorative setting may represent the artist’s studio.
