Necklace

George W. Shiebler & Co. American

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 706

George W. Shiebler & Co. produced a diverse array of artistic silver and jewelry, including this necklace inspired by ancient coins. An 1892 Jewelers’ Circular and Horological Review article described the firm’s popular "curio medallion work" as looking "as though it had been unearthed at Pompeii and Herculaneum." Here, each of the fifteen graduated medallions is stamped in low relief with a different classical head.
