In 1783 officers who served in the Continental Army under general George Washington formed the Society of the Cincinnati to maintain fellowship following the end of the Revolutionary War. Each member received a badge featuring a bald eagle suspended from oak and laurel leaves and scenes from the life of the ancient Roman statesman Cincinnatus. This example was presented to Major Samuel Nicholas of Philadelphia.
