Le gibbon, natif des montagnes boisées du sud de la Chine, n’est connu au Japon que grâce à la peinture et à la poésie. Le cri de l’animal est assimilé au noble esprit de la solitude. La tradition taoïste lui prête une force vitale supérieure. Les moines zen japonais appréciaient particulièrement les gibbons peints par le moine chinois Mu Qi (actif v. 1245). À la fin du XVe siècle, les représentations picturales du gibbon à la manière de Mu Qi étaient devenues un sujet de prédilection dans la décoration des paravents. Ici, cette chaîne de gibbons qui tentent bien inutilement d’atteindre un reflet de la lune, symbole de l’esprit éclairé, illustre un paradoxe zen fondamental.
