Lungo la costa del Maine un northeaster è una tempesta di grande violenza e di lunga durata. Quando Homer esibì per la prima volta questa tela nel 1895, il dipinto comprendeva anche due uomini intabarrati per proteggersi, rannicchiati sotto la colonna di spruzzi, che in origine era meno imponente. Sebbene il quadro fosse stato accolto con favore dal pubblico e acquistato da George A. Hearn, un importante collezionista d’arte americana, Homer in seguito lo ritoccò conferendogli una potenza ancora maggiore. Come osservato da un critico, Northeaster presenta “tre fatti fondamentali: la forza aspra delle rocce, il possente e maestoso movimento del mare e l’ampia atmosfera creata da grandi spazi naturali non contaminati dalla presenza della fragilità umana”.
