Rogier van der Weyden fu un ritrattista molto ambito. Il soggetto di questo ritratto, Francesco d’Este, era figlio illegittimo del signore di Ferrara e fu inviato nei Paesi Bassi per ricevere un’ istruzione e una formazione militare. Il giovane fu immortalato da Rogier van der Weyden a Bruxelles intorno al 1460. Il martello e l’anello che tiene tra le dita potrebbero essere premi vinti ad un torneo o simboli di potere.
