ロヒール・ファン・デル・ウェイデンは、肖像画家として大いに人気を博した画家でした。この肖像画に描かれているフランチェスコ・デステは、フェラーラの君主の庶子としての教育と兵役のためネーデルラントへ送られ、ファン・デル・ウェイデンは1460年頃にブリュッセルでこの肖像画を描きました。フランチェスコが持っている金槌と指輪は、ジョスト(一騎打ち競技)の賞品、あるいは権威の象徴かも知れません。
