Peonie al vento

John La Farge, insieme a Louis Comfort Tiffany, rivoluzionò l’aspetto delle vetrate in America. Peonie al vento, una delle prime finestre da lui eseguite, si ispira a un dipinto cinese su rotolo raffigurante peonie in fiore. Tra il 1879 e il 1909 La Farge eseguì almeno sette vetrate basate sullo stesso tema e questa fu la prima. La finestra utilizza un vetro nuovo e insolito: un insieme di pietre preziose, cabochon, vetro pressato e fuso e vetro smerigliato opalescente. La diversa grana dei materiali e i colori vivaci conferiscono un tono fortemente ornamentale ed esotico. La vetrata, fabbricata a New York, venne installata a Newport, nel Rhode Island, nella ricca dimora di Henry G. Marquand.
