メイン州沿岸に吹き付ける北東からの嵐は、延々と続く猛烈な暴風雨です。1895年にホーマーがこの作品を最初に展示した時には、雨具を着たふたりの男性が波しぶきの下にしゃがんでおり、波は現在より小さく描かれていました。作品は好評を博し、アメリカ美術の著名な収集家だったジョージ A. ハーンが購入しましたが、ホーマーは後に修正を加え、力強い印象を高めました。ある批評家が評したように、「北東の風」は「岩の荒々しい力強さ、海の重苦しく雄大な動き、そして、取るに足りない人間の存在の跡のない偉大な自然空間がもつ壮大な雰囲気という、3つの根本的真実」を示しています。
