台付きの飾り戸棚
ヤン・ファン・メークレンは、アムステルダムの富裕層向けの豪華な寄木造りの調度品を専門とした家具職人でした。彼の作品とされるもののうち、この作品は最小ながら、最も絵画的な様相を示しています。脚付き台の上の戸棚は単純な箱型ですが、緻密な寄木細工による大きな花束の装飾が施されています。水仙の花びらを表すためにメギのようなやまぶき色の木材を選んだり、また白色に近いモチノキ材を退色しやすい天然染料で着色するなど巧みな技法により、ヴァン・メークレンは当時の静物画を思わせる豊かで自然な色彩を生み出しました。
