盾
ソロモン諸島の象嵌細工の盾はそのほとんどが普通の籠細工製ですが、この作品は、パリナリウムの木の実のペーストを塗り、彩色した後に真珠貝で象嵌細工を施したもので、神秘的なきらめきを放っています。盾のモチ ーフには常に戦士または守護神と思われる人物が中心に描かれ、その下の横帯には通例どおり人間の顔が描かれています。非常に壊れやすいことから、これらの盾は社会的な地位や戦功を示すための儀式用だったと考えられていますが、約25枚ほどしか現存していません。
