방패

Early to mid-19th century

불가사의한 느낌과 반짝이는 이미지가 돋보이는 이 방패는 솔로몬 제도에서 발견되었으며 일반적인 방패 세공 방법인 파리나리움 열매를 붙이고 그 위에 색을 칠한 후 진주 층을 끼워 넣어 제작된 것으로 현재까지 약 25점만이 남아 있습니다. 당시에 만들어진 방패는 이 작품과 마찬가지로 가로선 위 중심 부분에 한결같이 전사 또는 정령이라 추정되는 인간 형상의 문양을 그려 넣었습니다. 아주 섬세한 기법으로 제작된 이 방패는 사회적 지위가 높은 인물 또는 전쟁에서 좋은 성과를 보인 전사가 종교의식에서 들었던 것으로 추정됩니다.
