仮面
オーストラリアとニューギニアの間にあるトレス海峡の島々に特有の亀甲の仮面は、亀の甲羅を温め、任意の形に曲げて縁に孔を開け、繊維で縫い合わせ立体的に仕上げています。マブイアッグ島で作られたと思われるこの仮面は、おそらく葬儀と、豊穣や豊漁(猟)を祈願する儀式で使われたと考えられます。これらの儀式では、男性がブク、カラール、またはカラと呼ばれる仮面とサラサラと鳴る腰蓑の衣装を着け、神話の主人公たちの生涯の出来事を再現しました。そのような人物を表したと思われるこの仮面は、彼の象徴と思われるトーテムのグンカンドリを頂いています。
