19 世紀に赤道アフリカのファング族の職人によって作られた最大の自立式頭像であるこの作品は、聖遺物を入れた簡易祭壇の上に祖先を祭った彫像を安置する伝統と結びついています。20世紀初頭に祭壇から取り外されたこの彫像は、西洋の芸術家に大きな影響を与えました。チリの詩人、ビンセンテ・ウイドブロが1918 年にパリに移住直後に購入し、ピカソに捧げた詩「赤道儀」を執筆するインスピレーションになったものと思われます。
