牡鹿形杯

動物の前半身をかたどった杯は、古代中近東美術の初期に製作されました。堂々とした枝角を頂いた牡鹿が美しく写実的に表現されているところは、ヒッタイト美術の特徴を示しています。器の胴部は12 枚以上の銀板を打ち出して成形したもので、口縁には狩りの成功を祝う慣習的または宗教的儀式を行う人物が打ち出し技法で描かれています。ヒッタイト族の儀式に使われた品々の中には、このような動物の形をした器がよく見られます。
