デムスは1920年代に当代のアメリカ人芸術家、作家、パフォーマンス・アーティストに敬意を表する象徴的なポスターの連作を制作しました。この作品はアメリカの詩人ウィリアム・カルロス・ウィリアムズに捧げたもので、彼の詩 The Great Figure(鮮やかな数字)が、タイトルとイメージの基となっています。詩にあるように、雨の街の街灯で照らされた道路を消防車No.5が大きな音を立てて走り抜けています。動きと音を暗示する断片化された形、言葉や線は、フランスのキュビズムとイタリアの未来派に由来しますが、都市を扱った主題、スケール感覚、角の鋭さなどはプレシジョニズム(精密派)の特徴です。
