マハヴィラの生誕を予言するデヴァナンダの14の縁起のよい夢(手書きのカルパストラ聖典のフォリオ)

この二つ折り本は、ジナ・ティールタンカラ(浅瀬をわたる者)の伝記が表された挿絵入り「カルパストラ」(聖典)に含まれていたものです。後にマハヴィラの母親となるブラーマニ・デヴァナンダが見た14の縁起のよい夢を描いています。夢はそれぞれ寝室の場面の上部にある印で示されています。金箔と、ラピスラズリによる濃い群青色に、14–15世紀のデリー・スルタン朝時代に交流のあったイランの絵画様式の影響を示唆しています。全体としてインド西部の古代様式を踏襲してい ますが、この作品にはデリーとその周辺地域で大きく開花した、インド北部の新興画派につながる大胆な色使いと装飾性が見られます。横長の形態は、ヤシの葉を切って下処理したものに描いた、インド最古の挿絵本を彷彿とさせます。
