水牛の魔神マヒシャを討伐するドゥルガー女神

腕が18本あるこのドゥルガー女神(デービー、母神)は、当初あった台座の上で水牛の魔神マヒシャを片足で踏みつけながら、シヴァ神の三つ又で突き刺して打ち負かすところを表しています。この像に描かれた悪に対する善の勝利は、マヒシャとの戦いに敗れた男性の神々が絶望してドゥルガーに討伐を要請し、それぞれ彼女に魔法の武器を与えたことによるものです。ドゥルガーは、魔神を殺すことで森羅万象を暗闇から開放しました。デービーの力の最高の表現であるドゥルガーは、「難攻不落の者、不屈な者」として捉えられています。
