聖母と聖ヨハネとキリストの磔刑

1624–25年頃のこの作品は、おそらくユトレヒトにあったカトリック教会の祭壇画として描かれたものと思われます。ユトレヒトではカトリック派は容認されていたものの、奨 励されてはいませんでした。痩せこけたキリストの体、平面的な空間表現、星空などに見られる著しく古典的な特徴をもつこの作品は、中世後期の木版画、デューラーの版画、そしてフランスのコルマールにあるマティアス・グリューネヴァルトの《イーゼンハイムの祭壇画》を思い起こさせます。この作品は破損または破壊された古い祭壇画の代わりとして作られたと考えられています。背景の空の青色は当初はもっと鮮やかでしたが、退色しやすい顔料(スマルト)で塗られたため色が褪せています。
