壺、カップとりんごのある静物

1870年代のセザンヌは、静物画を中心に制作しました。この作品の独特の壁紙は、セザンヌが普段描いたくすんだ背景と異なるだけでなく、V字型の模様が箪笥の端から垂れている白い布ナプキンの形にも繰り返されています。このナプキンは、セザンヌが最も好んだ風景画のモチーフであるモン・サン・ヴィクトワールを上下逆にして表したものだと解釈されています。布の深いひだが山の尾根や谷間を思い起こさせます。このような造形上の比喩から、造形と技法の習作として静物画を描くことの多かった彼の構図は、意図的に構成されたものであることが分かります。絵具の断片的な塗り方は、セザンヌが印象派の技法を吸収・消化したことを反映していると考えられます。
