トロイアの女性は、トロイア陥落後長年の放浪生活に終止符を打とうと自分たちの船に火を放ちました。遠景の雲と雨は、アイネアスの要請で大火を消すためにユピテルが放った嵐の前兆です。ロランは、この絵をローマのギロラモ・ファルネーゼのために描いたと目録に記録しています。博識な司教だったファルネーゼは、ローマ教皇大使としてカルヴァン派に対抗するため、スイス連邦のアルプス地方で何年も精力的に活動した人物でした。1643年ローマに戻った彼は、この奉仕を表すことを意図してヴァージルの『アエネイス』(5.604–710)のこの場面を選んだのでしょう。
