この肖像画は、ラファエロの盛期ルネサンス様式を踏襲したコローの作品の中でも、最も完成度の高いものに数えられます。主題のポ ーズは、コローの時代にラファエロの自画像と思われていたラファエロ作《ビンド・アルトヴィティ》(ワシントン・ナショナルギャラリー蔵)によく似ています。X線分析により、当初コローがこの作品をチェロを弾く女神ポリムニアとして描き、それを上塗りしたことが分かっており、ラファエロを意識して描いた絵でありながら、コローは段階的にこの完成図にたどり着いたものと思われます。人物の頭に巻かれたツタは芸術の永久性を象徴しているのかも知れません。作品は未完成で署名はなく、コローの生前に公開されることはありませんでした。
