現代都市生活を記録したドーミエは、産業化による19世紀中頃のパリの変貌の様子を捉え、列車の旅の場面を繰り返し描きました。この未完成の絵は、三等車内の旅人の辛い様子を描いた3部作の1枚です。当時の人たちは、主題の普遍性に応え、「私たちを運命論的な絶望へと追いやる窮乏や汚点、夢の挫折や至難など、人間生活の包括的な描写である」と評価しました。
